Talking about mobile Web and domains in Central and Eastern Europe

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

BledAfter completing a very successful visit to Russia with dotMobi’s Pinky Brand last week, I am currently attending the Second International conference for ccTLD registries and registrars of CIS, Central and Eastern Europe, an interesting event organized by the Russian Registry in the beautiful town of Bled, Slovenia.

The conference is well attended by many Registry operators and Registrars from these areas that not always able to attend ICANN meetings, and is thus a very good occasion to get a pulse of the domain market and the development of the internet in these countries.

Central and Eastern Europe and the countries of the CIS are
characterized by very high penetration of mobile phones. With a mobile-to-PC ratio in many cases close to 10 to 1, they are without doubt interesting markets for mobile Web solutions.

I was very happy to be invited to discuss the mobile Web and the great opportunities for growth and new useful services that it provides for businesses and end-users. I shared dotMobi´s experience in supporting open standards and accessibility, and talked about the importance of building mobile sites that are easy for users to find and that address the specific, unique needs of users on the go.

For users, the .mobi domain plays a pivotal role in building confidence by making made-for-mobile content easy to identify and access. And thanks to tools like Instant Mobilizer, the .mobi domain complements an existing desktop presence. I also talked about our unique ability to work collaboratively with ccTLDs.

After my presentation, I received several inquiries about Instant Mobilizer and DeviceAtlas — a clear sign that the market needs simple, effective solutions to make mobile Web publishing more accessible. Many Registrars here understand that mobile Web will have a very strong role in their future growth, and dotMobi is working actively to establish long-term partnerships to support these efforts.

dotMobi Goes to Russia

Russian Press Confernece

On 2 September 2009, Pinky Brand and Francesco Cetraro from dotMobi went to Russia to participate in a press conference hosted by Russia's largest registrar of domain names, RU-Center.

The primary reason for the conference was to introduce the availability of Instant Mobilizer to Russia via RU-Center.

If your Russian is strong, you can read this article about the event, as well as see a video recording of the complete event (it's 70 minutes long.) The machine translation of the article is located here (via Google Translate).

By the way, based on that Google translation, it looks like Russian words for "Internet domain" also means "blast zone." I can't help but think there's symbolism in that.

A couple of interesting sites

Monday, June 15th, 2009

LACandy 1. icann.mobi — If you're heading down to ICANN's meeting in Sydney, Australia, next week, you'll want to bookmark icann.mobi. The site has the complete meeting schedule for the event as well as information on how to get around Sydney and where you can have dinner and drinks. All phone numbers are click-to-call links, so it's easy to make reservations or call a taxi.

2. lacandy.mobi – Even if you've never watched Laguna Beach or The Hills, you've likely heard the name Lauren Conrad (a/k/a/ "LC"). On 16 June, she's releasing a book called L.A. Candy and — as part of the launch — she's also launching a .mobi site: lacandy.mobi. You can find out plenty — maybe more than you wanted — about L.A. Candy at the site. And if you haven't yet "met" Lauren, you can catch up with what you've missed at the site.

Interview with dotMobi’s Pinky Brand

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Last week, dotMobi's Director of Global Domain Sales, Pinky Brand, was in Warsaw, speaking at the "Future Business Trends in the Domain Industry" conference. While he was there, the Webhosting.pl team managed to pin him down for a few minutes to do a video interview, which you might enjoy seeing.

And if the conference topic interests you, there are additional videos from the conference available for you to view.

More dotMobi Consumer-level Advertising

Monday, March 16th, 2009

IMAd_13March09

Continuing with the consumer-level advertising we mentioned in our last entry (commercial for .mobi — focusing on http://weather.mobi — that's being broadcast in 43 major US airports throughout March 2009), we participated in a special "Smartphone Supplement" that was inserted in the March 13 edition of USA Today, America's only national newspaper. The ad is on page 10 (you can also see it just above this note).

The supplement will also be available for all attendees of CTIA Wireless 2009, which is coming up on April 1-3 in Las Vegas. If you're going to be there, you can let us know via our contact email links on our events page (where you can also find out about other upcoming events where dotMobi will be.)

It’s Crunchies Time!

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

The 2008 Crunchies are here. This is the second annual competition under the "Crunchies" banner to recognize and celebrate the most compelling internet and technology innovations of the year.

It's an "American Idol" / "X Factor" / "Star Academy" style nomination process, so have some fun nominating some of your favorites (maybe even dotMobi).
